Galapagos & Ecuador

Straddling the Equator, Ecuador is one of South America's smallest countries, though boasting incredible diversity. It has indigenous cultures, tropical forests and active volcanoes as well as around 1,600 species of birds, 1,000 fish, 680 reptiles and amphibians, 230 mammals and a staggering 20,000 or more species of plants.

Straddling the Andes, the amazing habitat variety encompasses temperate cloud-forest, dry 'paramo' grassland, and rocky volcanic slopes, down to the fabulous biological riches of the Amazonian rain-forest. The scenery is absolutely awe-inspiring, the distances are not that great, and the country is most welcoming to tourists, with a good infrastructure.

600 miles to the west of Ecuador, and still part of that country, the isles of Galapagos are surely on every wildlife enthusiast's dream-list of places to visit.
