TRIP DIARY

Sunday 18th March Travel Day

We arrived on time and were met by Sally Ann of Kalliopi and Zinos, our driver for the week. The motorway is now nearly complete to Paphos so it took us just under two hours. Of course we saw Greater Flamingos at the airport but we were sure to see them on our return. We took our time in getting settled at the Kissos Hotel and met up for dinner.

Monday 19th March Paphos headland

We started early at seven o'clock for a short sojourn to the beach area. Unfortunately there is now yet another hotel going up so we headed down to the beach first seeing Hooded Crow and a very nice male Black Francolin.

Today was our walking day so after breakfast we met up at reception and headed for Paphos headland. Our first bird was an Ortolan Bunting followed by Tree Pipits. We walked the beach for waders seeing only a Common Sandpiper but we had had good looks at Cretzschmar's Bunting.

We were stopped by rangers for the Paphos headland saying 'had we got tickets'; we had not so they turned us away and told us to go around the outside of the fence to go in via the entrance at the harbour for our tickets - rather a surprise after many years of just walking in here!

We stopped on the way for lunch at Theo's Restaurant having Moussaka and local fish and after lunch went in to Paphos headland. I think this is now a good idea as all the sites are now open for everybody who has paid.

We walked and saw many Greco/Roman sites plus some good birds including Cyprus Wheatear and some good plants including a Woodcock Orchid - the weather was lovely, sunny and hot so not that good for birds but we did see quite a few of the local special species including Black-headed Wagtail.

At the end of our walk we did see a flock of twenty plus Red-rumped Swallow plus Barn Swallow, Sand and House Martin giving a splendid example of comparison.

We returned for a swim for a few and drinking the free wine from Kalliopi on the terrace, a wonderful end to a splendid day of sun and heat. Keith and I were hoping for a bit of cloud and depression for more birds but most were very happy with the wonderful Mediterranean sunshine.

Tuesday 20th March Asprokremnos pools, Kensington cliffs, Akrotiri Salt Lake, Lady's Mile and Zakaki pools

Our pre-breakfast stroll saw our Black Francolin and got us to the quarry on Paphos headland where we saw more wheatears, our Steppe Grey Shrike and Cyprus Wheatear a lot closer.

After breakfast we left in our coach with driver Zinos and travelled to Asprokremnos pools where we saw a couple of Chukar, very good views of Cyprus Warbler and brief views of Spectacled Warbler plus Cetti's Warbler, Chiffcaff and Lesser Whitethroat. We also saw some good plants as Cyprus had a wet winter and is now VERY green. The weather was again hot and sunny so we stopped at Aphrodite's Rock for photographs and a cool drink.

We continued on to Kensington Cliffs and, as we approached down the track in our bus, immediately in front of us was a very close Griffon Vulture. Unfortunately it must have alighted on the cliff just out of our sight as we did not see it again. The plants were again good in this area and Cyprus Warblers were singing their hearts out.

We continued on for lunch at Phassouri reed beds but although the reeds had grown and were well established after the burn last year the authorities had stopped the water going into the marsh and therefore it was dry, so no waders.

After lunch we drove south to Akrotiri salt lake seeing about five hundred Greater Flamingos at a distance plus Pintail and Shoveler and a somewhat closer group of Ruff.

We stopped at my favourite stop for Cyprus Orchid but due to the heavy rains there were only two spikes; however everyone was pleased to see this rare orchid.

We continued on by bus across the corner of the salt lake to Lady's Mile. Up the mile we stopped at the local pools but there was very little in the way of waders, Little-ringed and Kentish Plover and a few Black-headed Gulls. We also stopped at Zakaki pools but there was nothing except a distant pelican - obviously tame - and a very nice male Pallid Harrier.

By now the day was getting away from us so we returned to Paphos stopping at the very old church at Geroskipou with some buying Cyprus Delight or Geroskipou Delight.

We returned to our hotel just after five o'clock and met for the log at seven.

Wednesday 21st March Asprokremnos pools and Troodos mountains

Our pre-breakfast walk produced a Stone Curlew and three Spur-winged Plover plus the usual wheatears.

After breakfast we left for the start at Asprokremnos pools where we startled fourteen Purple Heron whilst they flew around the dam waiting for us to disappear, so we retired towards the coach and watched them come back to the pools. We left them in peace and carried on up to the Troodos Mountains.

We first stopped for Magpies hoping for a Great Spotted Cuckoo but with no luck, then carried on to a wonderful bar, where we saw Naked Man·orchids. When we left Sue spotted a large raptor, and it then flew over us: it was a Long-legged Buzzard in excellent light and just over our heads.

We continued on to our lunch stop in the foothills of the Troodos Mountains where we saw quite a few orchids plus Cyprus Rock Cress but no raptors. We continued up into the Troodos Mountains and headed for Mount Olympus which is the highest point on Cyprus. Here the snow was only in patches but we did see Cyprus Crocus plus two other endemics. We also had very good views of the Cyprus sub-species of Coal Tit, which sounds rather like a Great Tit but certainly looks different.

We returned down from the Troodos Mountains and stopped yet again at Asprokremnos pools where we saw a wonderful male Pallid Harrier and the original flock of thirteen/fourteen Purple Heron plus a distant flock of 35 Purple Heron - what an end to the day.

Thursday 22nd March Akamas peninsula, Monashilakas picnic site, Kannaviou

The weather was a bit cloudy for early pm but not raining. We did our usual pre-breakfast walk seeing very little except a nice Ortolan Bunting and our splendid Steppe Grey Shrike plus Cretzschmar's Bunting and two Common Sandpiper.

We left at nine o'clock for the Akamas peninsula getting there at 9.45. We walked to Aphrodite's baths and then along the coast track seeing many Sardinian Warbler and Blackcap. Our first look outside the coach produced Sardinian Warbler and Subalpine Warbler, but this did not stay long. Our walk produced leaves of the endemic Cyprus cyclamen and a large flock of Jackdaw plus back at the coach a nice male Spanish Sparrow collecting nest material.

We left the Akamas peninsula as it was getting a bit crowded and travelled to Monashilakas picnic site for orchids and our lunch. We spent a half hour before lunch seeing a splendid male Masked Shrike plus lots of orchids such as Serapias and Giant Orchid, and we also saw Serin, Chaffinch and heard and saw Goldfinch.

After lunch having partaken of a splendid chocolate cake for Christine's birthday we then spent an hour at the orchid spot near Kannaviou which since last year had been devastated of trees. However we did find a nice colony of Roman Orchid and about ten spikes of Anatolian Orchid which due to the felling of pines was a rather nice find.

We returned to our hotel where some visited the Tombs of the Kings and we then met up at seven for our log.

Friday 23rd March Agios Georgios (Cape Drepanum) and Avakas gorge

A cloudy start so we thought 'very good for migrants', but when we visited Paphos headland before breakfast we did not get that many: a couple of Tawny Pipits and four Turnstone.

After breakfast we called at Queens Bay Hotel but they were cleaning out the sewage pipes so we left in quite a hurry! We continued on to Agios Georgios, a headland just on the southern edge of the Akamas peninsula. Here the weather was again cloudy with even a touch of rain but we did see Red-throated Pipit, Skylark and of course the usual wheatears such as Northern and Isabelline.

We lunched on the cliff top in some shelter from the wind and then travelled to Avakas gorge. Here we saw lots of Blackcap and a fleeting glimpse of Ruppell's Warbler. We continued on foot up the gorge seeing a Wryneck and a wonderful Little Owl. We returned and spent some time at the start of the gorge where the bushes were closest, and three of us saw a splendid sighting of Ruppell's Warbler plus lots of Blackcap. The gorge had been good, with us seeing many Sardinian Warblers.

We returned by coach to our hotel with most of the tour members all a bit tired after the walking and with the wind at Agios Georgios taking its toll.

Saturday 24th March Asprokremnos pools and reservoir

Our pre breakfast walk got us close views of Ortolan and Cretzschmar's Bunting plus five Turnstone and a couple of Common Sandpipers.

We left by 4x4 Landrover and a minibus driven by George Joakim and Christos to get to Asprokremnos pools and reservoir. We arrived at Asprokremnos pools, as usual, and saw a Purple Heron, a female Garganey duck plus Chiffchaffs and Moorhens with three Alpine Swift. We also saw a large raptor which we decided was a Steppe Buzzard. We left the pools and went on a track to see wheatears but the area had been bulldozed so we then went to the Nata village and partook of coffee, beverages and beer.

We then headed for my favourite orchid spot, seeing Loose-flowered Orchid and lots of Serapias vomeracea.

We then travelled down to the abandoned village of Finikas for lunch. The picnic lunch as usual was fantastic but before our picnic we walked to the village to try and see wheatears but no luck so we returned for our picnic lunch. Afterwards we returned to the orchid site for photographs and the group in the 4x4 saw a female Marsh Harrier.

We did the log at six o'clock and then left at 6.30 to our mezze dinner at the village of Kathikas which of course was superb. The actual restaurant was called Araouzos Traditional Tavern.

Sunday 25th March Travel day

We started at nine o'clock and we had a good mornings birding before going to the airport. We started off at Asprokremnos Pools seeing the usual passerines plus the female Garganey, Alpine Swift and Green Sandpiper.

We continued on towards Larnaca stopping at a bar about thirty kms from Larnaca where Keith and I saw a close Great Spotted Cuckoo which I believe some saw at a distance.

On then to Larnaca salt lake and the north pools where we saw about five hundred Greater Flamingos with some in flight a fantastic sight. We also saw a Black-winged Stilt and two Slender-billed Gulls plus a distant flock of about six Kentish Plovers. We lunched and then went to Larnaca airport where I said my goodbyes to the party and waited for the next group - the plane was on time by the way.

The weather had been mostly fantastic with hot sun most of the days. However this weather suits very well the passerine migrants, but does not bring them down for us to see. We did see however the Cyprus bird specialities and the plants were wonderful due to the wet winter.

Acknowledgments

To all the party for being such good company and especially to Christine who produced a plant list for us. We also need to thank our drivers Zinos and Gustos for getting us to the sites and for preparing excellent picnics.

We hope to see you all again on another Travelling Naturalist trip.
