Mammals

Red Fox Vulpes vulpes: Reported frequently in the 90s, but not in recent years.

Eurasian Badger Meles meles: My first record was of one 'trotting unconcerned' on 18 Sep 1982, at 0815, amongst bushes in the cadet base. 2002: Reports from the N side, from the Tavern Lawns with cubs in summer, and on 8 Oct. 2003: Reported on 15 Apr.

European Otter Lutra lutra : Two convincingly reported 'playing around the rocks' below the fort in Jan 2005. Otters are increasing in Dorset, with several records from the River Wey, which makes this a very probable record.

Grey Seal Halichoerus grypus: One juv. or female in Newton's Cove on 11 Oct 2002 was the first record from the site. One in Newton's Cove all day on 24 Oct 2003.

Bottle-nosed Dolphin Tursiops truncatus: Occasional in Weymouth Bay and Harbour. A pod, possibly 5 individuals reported from Weymouth Bay on 27 Apr 2001. A tame individual male, known locally as 'Randy', was reported from Newton's Cove, and, more often, in Weymouth Harbour, on various dates Apr-Sep 2002. Apparently he would follow boats out of the harbour, and was quite keen on the small ferry rowing boat crossing the harbour.

Harbour Porpoise Phocoena phocoena: Two in Weymouth Bay, 15 Apr 2005.

Roe Deer Capreolus capreolus :One reported ''terrorised by dog owners and yobs on bicycles' in the Echo, week of 16 Sep 2005.

 

 

Grey Squirrel Sciurus carolinensis: A recently much-increased resident, fed by visitors. Numbers appear to have stabilised recently. Record max count 15 on 30 Jun 2002.

Brown Rat Rattus norvegicus: Present all year, thriving on the rubbish. Max seen at one time three on 15 Apr 2003.

European Rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus : One around the Tavern Lawns seen on 16 Nov 2005 had reportedly been present since July.

Common Lizard Lacerta vivipera: One on the S landslip on 16 Jun 2002 was my first record for the Nothe

Ads noted on 13 & 17 Sep, max 4 on 29 Sep. 2002: Noted 10 May - 1 Sep. Max 11 on 24 Aug. 2001: Noted 25 July - 9 Oct. Max 5 on 9 Oct. 2000: Noted 11 - 20 Sep. Record max 13 on 16 Sep.

Small White Artogeia rapae: 2004: Noted 23 Jul - 27 Sep. Max 31 on 19 Sep. 2003 : Noted 4 May - 9 Oct. Record max 44 on 29 Sep. 2002: Noted 25 Apr - 31 Aug. Max 28 on 24 Aug. 2001: Noted 25 July - 9 Oct. Max 5 on 25 July. 2000: Noted from the very early date of 12 Mar to 20 Sep. Max 8 on 16 Sep.

Green-veined White Artogeia napae : 2004: One on 12 Jun was my third record for The Nothe, followed by singles on 29 & 30 Jul. 2003: One on 19 Aug 2002: Single on 24 May on the NE slope.

Clouded Yellow Colias croceus: 2004: One on 16 Sep (JL). 2003: A total of 12 noted 24 Aug - 12 Nov, the latest ever recorded. Max 7 on 9 Oct including a helice form. 2002: A small influx of 6 on 24 Aug only. 2000: Two on 16 Sep. An impressive max 10 on 20 Sep followed by one on 30 Sep and two, including a helice form, on 6 Oct. with the last one on 26 Oct. An excellent series of records in an invasion year.

Small Copper Lycaena phlaeas: 2004: Single on 20 & 23 Jul - the second record for the site. One on the landslip on 29 Sep 2003 was the first record for the site.

Holly Blue Celastrina argiolus: 2004: One on 30 Jul was the third record. 2002: Three on 10 May. 2001: Single on 25 July.

Common Blue Polyommatus icarus:
2004: A good year, with a long flight period. Noted 12 Jun (earliest date) - 30 Aug, max three on 22 Jun & 5 Aug.

2003: Noted 19 -25 Aug, max 6 on 24 Aug.
2002: Noted 16 & 18 Jun, then again 24 & 26 Aug, record max 15 on 24 Aug.
2001: Noted 25 Jul & 25 Aug, with max 5 on 25 Aug.

 

Monarch Danaus plexippus: One reported on 5 Oct 2001, and one seen on 12 Oct 2001. Part of a remarkable influx of this primarily North American species (or were they from Spain or the Canaries?), the sight of this huge butterfly beating its way across the top lawns pursued by two Red Admirals was one of the highlights of the year. The first records for The Nothe.

Peacock Inachis io: 2004: One reported on 11 Feb was just beaten by Painted Lady as the earliest butterfly recorded. The only record of the year! 2003: One on 15 Apr was the earliest ever. Two on 19 Aug, with larvae on the fort slopes 22 - 31 Jul, the first breeding record for the site. 2002: Singles on 10 May, 2 & 24 Aug. 2000: Single noted 5 May.

Red Admiral Vanessa atalanta: 2004: One on 16 Apr, the earliest date for this species. Then just seven records, 13 Aug - 10 Oct, with a remarkable single reported on 31 Dec, by definition the latest record. 2003: Noted 28 Jul - 2 Dec. Incredible nos in Sep with record max 95 on 4 Sep, but also 86 on 20 Sep. 2002: Noted 29 July - 14 Oct. Max 4 on 9 Oct. 2001: Noted 25 July - 30 Dec. Max 17 on 21 Oct. 2000: Noted 11 Sep - 4 Nov. Max 12 on 16 Sep.

Painted Lady Vanessa cardui: 2004: The earliest ever butterfly recorded was seen on on 9 Feb, with several on 11 Feb, then none until 25 Jun, with max 2 on 19 Sep. A poor year, in contrast to 2003. 2003: Noted 4 May and 8 Jul - 29 Sep. a record year, with nos peaking in Aug, record max 31 on 24 Aug. 2002: Noted 16 & 18 Jun and 11-31 Aug. Record max 7 on 24 Aug. 2001: One on 25 Aug. 2000: A good year. Noted 23 Aug - 23 Sep; max 4 on 23 Aug and 20 Sep. Earliest date: 9 Feb 2004.


Painted Lady, 9 February 2004 - the earliest butterfly recorded

Small Tortoiseshell Aglais urticae: 2004 : One on 23 Feb was the earliest date for this sp in common wuth several vanessids. Then noted 23 Mar - 16 Apr. Bred on site again, with caterpillars seen on 18 May, but no ads seen thereafter. 2003: Two on 22 Mar were the earliest on record. One on 17 Apr was followed by larvae on the fort slopes 22 - 31 Jul, the first breeding record for the site. No great influx ensued, however, with max 5 on 10 Aug, and the last two on 29 Sep. 2002: A good influx in late August. Noted 23 - 31 Aug, record max 7 on 28 Aug. 2000: One on 16th and two on 20 Sep.

Comma Polygonum c-album: One on 27 Sep 2004.One reported on 8 Sep 2003. One on 20 Sep 2000.

Marbled White Melanargea galathea: 2004: Noted 15 Jun - 5 Aug. Record max 37 (previous max 17!) on 29 Jun. An excellent year - one of the great wildlife treasures of The Nothe in summer. Long may it continue to live here! 2003: Noted 8 - 28 Jul. Record max 17 on 11 Jul. One seen eaten by a House Sparrow on 28 Jul. 2002: Noted 4 July - 11 Aug. Max 15 on 4 July. 2001: Noted 7 July - 25 Aug. Max 4 on 25 July.

Ringlet Aphantopus hyperantus: 2004: Still doing OK, but lower numbers this year - another local speciality. Noted 17 Jun - 20 Jul, max 5 on 25 Jun. 2003: Good to see the colony still thriving. Noted 8 - 13 Jul, max 9 on 11 Jul. 2002: A superb year. Noted 18 Jun - 4 Aug, max 9 on 6 Jul. 2001: Single on 25 July.

Small Skipper Thymelicus sylvestris: 2004: Singles on 29 Jun & 23 Jul were the third and fourth records for The Nothe. 2003: Two on 11 Jul. 2002: Two on 17 Jul.

Large Skipper Ochlodes venatus: 2004: Singles on 15 & 17 Jun. 2003: Singles on 11 & 28 Jul. 2002: Noted 16 Jun - 29 Jul, max 2 on 17 Jul. 2001: Single on 25 July.

Moths

Orange Swift Hepialus sylvina: 2003: Singles noted on 5 dates, 22 Aug - 15 Sep. 2001: Noted 25 Aug to 7 Sep. Max 2 on 7 Sep.

Six-spot Burnet Zygaena filipendulae: 2004: One on 17 Jun with several chrysalids seen. Then up to 3 per day until 23 Jun. A welcome return after last year's blank. 2002: One on 29 July, in the landslip area of the south slopes. 2001: Only seen on 25 July in the landslip area of the south slopes.

Long-winged Conehead Conocephalus discolor: 2004: Nymphs only seen, 29 Jul. 2003: Singles in the rough grass near the south-east rocks, 28 & 29 Aug. Seen in a very small area at the west end of the southern slopes, 22 Sep 2001, 30 Sep and 6 Oct 2000.

Dark Bush-cricket Pholidoptera griseoaptera: 2004: Adults noted calling from 5 Aug to 13 Oct. Max six on 11 Aug. 2003: Adults noted calling from 12 Aug to 4 Nov, the latest date recorded. Max six on 25 Aug. 2002: Adults noted calling from 22 Aug to 28 Sep. 2001: Adults noted calling from 27 July to 10 Oct. Max 7 on 26 Sep. 2000: Adults noted calling from 25 Aug - 30 Oct.

Meadow Grasshopper Chorthippus parallellus: Abundant, especially on S. slopes. 2004: Adults noted 15 Jun - 30 Aug. Still abundant in the tall grass areas. 2003: Adults noted 8 Jul - 25 Aug. 2002: Adults noted 18 Jul-31 Aug. 2001: Adults noted 14 Jul-9 Oct. 2000: Adults noted 18 Jul-26 Oct.

Common Field Grasshopper Chorthippus brunneus: Much less common than the above species. 2002: Just one on 24 Aug. 2001: Noted 25 Aug - 9 Oct.

Common Green Grasshopper Omocestus viridulus: Noted on 30 Sep 2000.

Common Blue Damselfly Enallagma cyathigerum: Singles on the landslip, 17 and 29 Jun 2004.

Southern Hawker Aeshna cyanea: 2003: Noted 28 Jul - 25 Aug. Max 2 on 5 Aug. 2002: Noted 26 Jul - 30 Sep. Max 4 on 29 Aug. 2001: Noted 25 Aug - 22 Sep. 2000: One on 28 Sep.

Scarce/Migrant Hawker Aeshna mixta: 2004: Noted four dates 23 Jul - 27 Sep, max two on 19 Sep. 2003 : An excellent series of records - seemingly an invasion year. Noted 10 dates 24 Aug - 9 Oct, record max five on 24 Aug. 2002: Singles on 23 & 24 Aug and 17 Sep. The first records, but hard to distinguish from A. cyanea as these are usually seen in flight high above the trees.

Common Darter Sympetrum striolatum: 2004: One on 19 Sep, a typical date. 2002: One on 24 Aug. 2001: Six on 21 Oct was the only record. Are these migrants? 2000: One on 6 Oct.

Wasp Spider Argiope bruennechi: This spectacular spider seen in long grass on the southern slopes, 22 Sep 2001, and in long grass near the south-east rocks, 24 Aug & 9 Sep 2003.

Sea Slater Ligia oceanica: Occasionally seen on the Stone Pier. 2004: Two on 13 Oct. 2003: The new walkway seemed to attract these out of the intertidal zone. Noted 28 & 29 Aug and 18 Sep. Record max 14 on 28 Aug. 2002: Single noted on 17 May. 2001: Singles noted on 14 May and 26 Sep.

Spiny Spider Crab Maia squinado: 2004: Noted off pier 12 - 25 Jun, max six, then on 9 Aug when one caught by a Great Black-backed Gull.. 2003: Noted off pier 8 Jul and 7 Aug. 2001: Good numbers clinging to the S side of the Stone Pier in summer. Noted from 7 July.

Edible Crab Cancer pagurus: 2002: One dead noted on 28 Jul.

Velvet Fiddler Crab Macropipus puber: One on the pier on 4 Sep 2003 - possibly dropped by a gull, but very much alive and pincing.
