Birding The Nothe

Postcards from the past

Many thanks to Phil Read for the use of his wonderful collection of old local postcards.

Heyday: The Nothe Pleasure Gardens in the thirties - plenty of good cover for birds, but also the dreaded New Zealand Flax making its presence felt.

Detail from the above, showing the tea hut, and it looks like hot chocolate for sale - or choc ices at least.

A card postmarked 9 August, 1923. A much more open aspect than the above - much of the tree growth seems to have taken place during the 30s.

Detail from the above showing the ice cream hut in an earlier incarnation

A card dated 15 September 1912 - bare grassland with freshly planted trees. No doubt fantastic for butterflies at this time!
