Summary of the year
The first butterflies of the year, Small Tortoiseshells, appeared on 22 Mar. On 15 Apr the first Peacock butterfly was noted and three Brown Rats were a new, not altogether welcome, max scurrying after the birdfood dropped on the path near CEFAS. A Painted Lady on 4 May was another good early record.
A good range of butterflies on 8 Jul included the earliest ever Gatekeepers. The butterfly theme continued through a warm July, with the second record of Small Skipper on 11 Jul, together with record nos of Marbled Whites and Ringlets on that day. Good to see both of these thriving in their core area on the south slopes. The 'underslope' held several Cinnabar moths, while an early Hornet Hoverfly Volucella zonaria was on the north-east sycamores. On 22 Jul the regrowth of nettles near the fort was covered with Small Tortoiseshell and Peacock caterpillars - the first breeding records for both, while 28 Jul produced a good selection of moths around the lights, and a Large White chrysalis, another first breeding record. On 31 Jul the fishermen were having a field day with many Mackerel and a Garfish on the end of the lines.
August started hot, and got hotter, with the second week seeing the highest temperatures ever recorded in the UK. Rush Veneer moths were present in record numbers on the hottest day, 10th Aug, while on 12th other insects were more in evidence, with what must be thousands of Syrphus balteatus hoverflies on the north side. On 19th Green-veined White was a year-tick, and more new moths were noted.
Butterflies started to reach really impressive numbers in the second half of August, with record numbers of Painted Lady and Small White on a sunny, warm and muggy 24 Aug, together with Clouded Yellow, the first of a good run of Migrant Hawker dragonflies, and an excellent selection of moths including a record max 82 Silver Y moths. Also recorded were Long-winged Conehead bush-cricket. and the spectacular spider Argiope bruennechi. The high tide on 28th had brought several Sea Slaters on to the walkway as well as masses of 'seaweed flies'.
On 4 Sep a Velvet Fiddler Crab on the pier - possibly dropped by a gull, but very much alive and pincing - was a first record, and there was a record max 95 Red Admiral butterflies counted on the trees - rather eclipsing the previous record max of 19 noted the week before! 9 Sep saw the first of several Hummingbird Hawkmoth records - the first on record here - and the second record of Comma. 29 Sep produced the first record of Small Copper butterfly and second of Wall Brown together with a new record max of Small White.
October produced a helice Clouded Yellow on 9th and Grey Seal (in Newton's Cove) on 24th, an excellent second record. The last butterfly was a Red Admiral on 2 Dec, while the final Hummingbird Hawkmoth was seen on the remarkable date of 12 Dec.
