Summary of sightings for species other than birds in 2001.

Mammals

Grey Squirrel Sciurus carolinensis: Present all year. Monthly maxima as follows:

Brown Rat Rattus norvegicus: Present all year, but not often seen. Singles noted in Feb, Aug, Oct and Nov, with max 2 on 4 Oct.
Bottle-nosed Dolphin Tursiops truncatus: The local pod, possibly 5 individuals, reported from Weymouth Bay on 27 April.
Fish
Ballan Wrasse Labrus bergylta: One caught on 12 Oct.
Corkwring Wrasse Crenilabrus melops: Seen off the Stone Pier. Noted from 4 June.
Mackerel Scomber scombrus: Several caught off the pier, 27 July.
Garfish Belone belone: Noted caught from the pier on 12 and 21 Oct.
Butterflies
Large White Pieris brassicae: Noted 25 July - 9 Oct. Max 5 on 9 Oct.
Small White Artogeia rapae: Noted 25 July - 9 Oct. Max 5 on 25 July.
Holly Blue Celastrina argiolus: Single on 25 July.
Common Blue Polyommatus icarus: Noted 25 July, with max 5 on 25 Aug.
Monarch Danaus plexippus: One reported on 5 Oct, and one seen on 12 Oct. Part of a remarkable influx of this primarily North American species (or were they from Spain or the Canaries?), the sight of this huge butterfly beating its way across the top lawns pursued by two Red Admirals was one of the highlights of the year. The first records for The Nothe.
Red Admiral Vanessa atalanta: Noted 25 July - 30 Dec. Max 17 on 21 Oct.
Painted Lady Vanessa cardui: One on 25 Aug.
Marbled White Melanargea galathea: Noted 7 July - 25 Aug. Max 4 on 25 July.
Meadow Brown Maniola jurtina: Single on 24 and two on 25 July.
Ringlet Aphantopus hyperantus: Single on 25 July. My first record for The Nothe.
Gatekeeper Pyronia tithonus: Max 5 on 25 July and single on 25 Aug.
Speckled Wood Pararge aegeria: Noted 2 May - 21 Oct. Max 2 on several dates.
Large Skipper Ochlodes venatus: Single on 25 July.
Moths
Udea ferrugalis : One on 7 Sep.
Orange Swift Hepialus sylvina: Noted 25 Aug to 7 Sep. Max 2 on 7 Sep.
Six-spot Burnet Zygaena filipendulae: Only seen on 25 July in the landslip area of the south slopes.
Common Emerald Hemithea aestivaria: One on 7 July.
Mullein Wave Scopula marginepunctata: Singles on 25 Aug and 7 Sep.
Small Fan-footed Wave Idaea biselata: One on 7 July.
Double-striped Pug Gymnoscelis rufifasciata: Singles noted 23 Aug - 7 Sep.
Light Emerald Campaea margaritata: One on 7 Sep
Pale Prominent Pterostoma palpina: One on 30 July.
Shuttle-shaped Dart Agrotis puta: One on 7 Sep.
Large Yellow Underwing Noctua pronuba: One on 21 Sep
Square-spot Rustic Xestia xanthographa: One on 23 Aug.
Lunar Underwing Omphaloscelis lunosa: Singles noted on 24 and 26 Sep.
Angle Shades Phlogophora meticulosa: One on 26 Sep.
Flounced Rustic Luperina testacea: Noted 23 Aug - 28 Sep. Max 14 on 25 Aug.
Vine's Rustic Hoplodrina ambigua: One on 25 Aug.
Silver Y Autographa gamma: One on 25 Oct
Orthoptera
Long-winged Conehead Conocephalus discolor: Seen in a very small area at the west end of the southern slopes, 22 Sep.
Dark Bush-cricket Pholidoptera griseoaptera: Adults noted calling from 27 July to 10 Oct. Max 7 on 26 Sep.
Meadow Grasshopper Chorthippus parallellus: Abundant, especially on S. slopes. Adults noted 14 July-9 Oct.
Common Field Grasshopper Chorthippus brunneus: Much less common than the above species. Noted 25 Aug - 9 Oct.
Dragonflies
Southern Hawker Aeshna cyanea: Noted 25 Aug - 22 Sep
Common Darter Sympetrum striolatum: Six on 21 Oct was the only record. Are these migrants?
Other insects
Syrphus balteatus : Hoverfly noted in large nos on 27 Aug.
Other groups
Argiope bruennechi: This spectacular spider seen in long grass on the southern slopes, 22 Sep.
Sea Slater Ligia oceanica: Occasionally seen on the Stone Pier. Singles noted on 14 May and 26 Sep.
Spider Crab : Good numbers clinging to the S side of the Stone Pier in summer. Noted from 7 July
