Upul is an all-round naturalist on birds, whales and mammals and also an expert on natural history. Having had his initial training from the Open University of Sri Lanka, he later worked on numerous scientific field projects. Upul holds a Certificate in Wildlife Conservation and Management from the Open University of Sri Lanka, and a Diploma in Palaeobiodiversity from the Post Graduate Institute of Archaeology – University of Kelaniya Sri Lanka.
