Photo of Rolf Nessing

After growing up in near Berlin among his father’s tortoises, lizards and snakes and his mother’s domestic animals, at the age of 14 Rolf volunteered as a conservation worker to pursue his interest in the natural world. Between 1984 and 1992 he worked at various nature reserves in Brandenburg state, contributing to facilities development and environmental education. A licenced bird ringer since 2000, his involvement in ringing has taken him to Russia, Israel and Palestine, Malta, Turkey and Spain, and he has also explored Scandinavia, the Balkans, Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean, Central Asia and Australia to explore. A freelance environmental educationalist, trainer and lecturer since 1992, Rolf has an outstanding knowledge of the birdlife of the Western Palaearctic – especially its songs and calls – and has published numerous articles on ornithology, entomology, herpetology and botany in professional journals.
